Ahh the humble Ostrich, with eyes that weigh more then its brain and a bit of genetic confusion is its lack of flight as a bird. They are awkward like a pubescent teen and just ugly enough to be cute. The ostrich is also fun to ride and easy to kiss! We found these Sahara desert natives nicely located in the Southern end of South Africa near the town of Oudtshoorn in the form of ostrich carpaccio on a bed of mixed greens followed up with rare grilled ostrich steak & a couple glasses of local red wine at the lovely Black Swan Restaurant. They have virtually no fat making the meat incredibly healthy to consume. And for 50 Rand or roughly $5 Canadian you can learn all there is to learn about this prehistoric bird for forty-five minutes and ride one ‘till you fall off! Well you can if you weigh less then 75 kilograms. From jumping off the highest bungee in the world the day before I still had 88KG written on my hand, a month of wine & dine tacks on a few extra KGs, lucky Keli was weight worthy. Being more of an obstacle then an interest if you put food anywhere within necks reach they will wrap there rubber band neck around you in what looks like a hug. Hell for even one little food pellet I got one to kiss me, well kiss me the way you’d expect a six foot bird with no teeth to kiss you. In good tourist fashion they catch one for you by putting a nice little cap over the eyes of the bird to calm it down then walk it into a little booth so you can jump on its back, I could only try it out before Keli actually rode it. You tuck your legs under the big wings where your legs rest against an incredibly warm back. From here Keli takes over for the ride and it looks about as graceful as beer pong and just a funny to watch. Check out the video below, it’s hilarious! All in all the small brained, toothless Ostrich is my new favorite ugly and delicious thing! You ever ridden anything odd & unusual? Let us know in the comments below!
