I had this question land in my inbox this week and like all things in life / travel you get want you are looking for. They wanted to know plainly "Is Couchsurfing Safe?". A number of other people chimed in with their responses. For the most part I thought subjectively, some just to tell their story. Here's what I responded: Like any open question you can find supporting evidence for any and every outcome you want to find. If you want to find reasons why it is safe you will find them below, if you want to find reasons why it is not safe, you will find them below too. "Is couchsurfing safe?" Yes great people, no terrible people, sometimes if you find the right people. "Do I look good in these shoes?" Yes great, no sneakers aren't for you, sometimes if you wear the right pants. I've hosted and been hosted via the couchsurfing website & personally I've never had even a slight bit of negativity to report. Once in Indonesia I had requested to surf at one persons house and she had sadly reported that one, someone else was already staying there and two she would actually be out of the country. The next day she emailed back to say that the other surfer would love to have us stay with them. She then put us in touch and the other surfer even drove into town to pick us up& drive us back to the house. Basically we were double surfing, amazing! If your open to a positive or negative experience you will have that one. Want some evidence, read the post about the girl who brought up "disgusting" sexual experiences with a possible host, then had a negative sexual experience with that host. We once stayed with a couple in Africa and asked them about what kind of beauty was in the area they were from, they showed us a lot of beauty before we left. Couchsurfing, like all of your surroundings is a reflection of your life. If you find that you don't like the surroundings you have found. Pleasantly leave and find some new surroundings.
