So you want to go someplace, you really want to go someplace. Maybe it’s Egypt. You want to go to Egypt sooooooooo bad. You want to see the pyramids, ride a camel and make friends with a mummy.  Fantastic, good for you. Go. Hope you’re a talker, ‘casue mummy’s don’t say much.

But wait, it’s also faaaaaaaar faaaaaar away, super dangerous and you’ll never be able to afford to go.

So you decide it’s never going to happen and that’s that.
Now maybe you live in Butte Montana and you want to see the lights and sights of New York, shopping, shows, night life etc.

Again it’s dangerous and expensive, thou not so far away. You find out you can stay in a hostel or rent a room with a local for cheap.

You find a tour company that is having a half price sale on everything as it’s out of season and tourism is slow. You book, go, have the time of your life. Make a new friend that travels and BOOM, your are closer to Egypt then you actually know.

You’ve just set a small goal, figured out the obstacles and achieved it. The next one will be that much bigger and that much easier.

I’ve always been a sort of casual runner. I ran on behalf of our track and field team once in grade 9. It was a 4000 meter race. I think I got 4th or 5th. The kid who got 1st had his big toe removed and put where his thumb was meant to be. He’d lost his thumb in a farming accident & that was the DR. solution. Imagine explaining that to your peers at 13. I got beat by a guy with 9 toes.

I took up casual running again three years ago. At the time my goal was 5kms. It was impossible. I hated it. I spent most of the hour trying to remember why I used to like this.

Five days a week for summer and winter I ran 5kms.

Then in the spring I just decide I’d go for 7kms. I never even occurred to me I could do it.

I did it. Then 10, I was a champ. I hit 14kms one day and couldn’t believe it. I was practically an Olympian.

Now I started dreaming the possibility of 21kms, a half marathon. So I signed up for one, ran all the time and one drizzely spring morning, exhausted, worn and surprisingly about half way in the pack of about 800ppl I finished my first official ½ marathon.

I slept for the following 48hrs.

This year I aimed for the full marathon. 42kms. Something that seemed IMPOSSIBLE three years ago. Now I’m running more then a half marathon for practice at least one day a week and the furthest I’ve hit is 32kms. Not in record speed, thou I did it.

Great, good for me. So I can run, millions of ppl can and a lot better then me, so what?

Well ever since my first year overseas at 18, touring Australia, New Zealand, Japan & Malaysia I’ve realised that the more big goals you have the easier it is to hit the next one.

If you’ve ever been dropped off in the middle of the night in a back alley of a foreign country, where you know nothing, especially not the language and sort out your basic needs for the night. Turning that into the most fantastic month in Cambodia or wherever you might be, you will slowly become more confident in doing anything.

I’ve since concurred many daunting tasks, as have many that have had there asses handed to them on the road. At first it’s scary, then it’s fun.

Go see the world, it will make you unstoppable.

If you want some help getting there I wrote a book that should be out in the next few days. Just enter your email on my home page and I’ll send you a copy, totally free.
